So when I switched RE's my new RE ordered a bit of blood work that my old RE didn't and he also did a vaginal ultra sound so we could do an antral follicle count and see how my uterus and ovaries were looking.
Well the u/s (ultrasound) revealed the case of shrinking ovaries.
Both my right and left ovaries have shrunk significantly since June 2011.
Currently my ovaries stats are as follows:
Rt Ov-H........ 2.8cm
Rt Ov-L......... 1.7cm
Lt Ov-H......... 2.4cm
Lt Ov-L.......... 0.8cm
In June of 2011 my ovaries stats were as follows:
Rt Ov-H........ 5.13cm
Rt Ov-L.........1.95cm
Lt Ov-H......... 3.27cm
Lt Ov-L.......... 1.19cm
It doesn't take much too see that in terms of just sheer numbers my ovaries have shrunk considerably. The one of concern to me presently is my left ovary which as you can see in length has shrunk considerably.
My current RE isn't worried though and said I'll be monitored closely to see how I respond to stims.
Really as he said there isn't much that can be done from worrying over it (I agree), all tests have proven I don't currently have an infection, nor did I have one previously (rule that out) so in effect all we can do is wait and see how I respond to stims and adjust my protocol going forward if necessary.
There is unfortunately no drug that can increase the size of your ovaries (something may have the side effect of doing so, but its not the main purpose of any drug....darn been listening to those warnings on med commercials for nothing....lol).
What does this mean for IVF?
In his words no difference.
We will proceed with my protocol as planned.
My Rt ovary showed 15 follicles and my Lt showed 9!
So even with being a bit shrunk he thinks those numbers are promising and we can proceed.
At this point he has advised that I not dwell over it.
There is no way of him telling if my measurements were done correctly in the first place.
Though we have the scans (a copy of them) it can be hard to tell.
Not to mention if my measurements were taken wrong the first time, it won't be the only thing my old RE did wrong....hence the switch.
Its definitely not a hinderance just wanted to fill you ladies in on what's been going on behind the scenes.
I know that all this IVF lingo can become a bit confusing at times so for that reaosn I've created a page of all the most common abbreviations used.
I'll still try to explain things in my post but I have found myself already speaking in the lingo and sometimes don't realize it until someone raises an eyebrow at me. "English por favor".
You can find the abbreviations explained here.
I'm ready for this, bring on the injections and everything else, this is my year.
Oh have I ever mentioned we've had baby names picked out for over a year now?
I'll save that for another post.

Sounds like your new RE is covering all bases. Good! I guess I've never heard of shrinking ovaries. How will this affect you long-term?

THIS IS YOUR YEAR! We're gonna keep te chant going!
Soon all we'll be lacking about is clothes and nurseries!
I'm glad your new RE seems to know his stuff!!! Fingers crossed for you!
Thanks ladies yeah my new RE is very thorough. Joey I had never heard of it either, but apparently there are different things that can make you ovaries shrink. Infection being one, menopause and pre-menopause being another, there are several there is no telling what it could be.
This is YOUR YEAR!!! We got this!! :)
Glad I found your blog. We're doing our second IVF in May...and I could use all the schooling I can get! Thanks!
Just found your blog and started following. My hubby and I are also TTC although we are not to the point to seek medical help just yet. It'll be nice to know in advance what we may be in store for.
I'm so glad things are progressing along and yaaahh for baby names!!
It sounds like your new RE is on top of things. That must make you feel so much better. Definitely keep me posted!
